PEDIATORCH smart phone applications

PediaTorch is an apps torch use to assist Pre Elimination Test for eye alingment. By using this apps, parents may perform basic test to detect any abnormalities of their pre school children's pupil reflex and extraocular muscle function.

3 benefits:
  1. Mantain position during procedure
  2. Respond to examiner
  3. Concentrate during examination

a. Extroccular Muscle Test
PEDIATORCH is torch light for Extraocular muscle test. It is an examination of the function
of the eye muscles. A doctor observes the movement of the eyes in six specific directions.

Procedure
  1.    Stand in front of the children.
  2.   Ask them to follow your torch light with their eyes while keeping their head in one position.
  3.   Using your torch light, trace an imaginary "H", making sure that your torch light moves far enough out and up/down so that you're able to see all appropriate eye movements (ie lateral and up, lateral down, medial down, medial up).
  4.   At the end, bring your torch light directly in towards the children's nose. This will cause them to look cross-eyed and the pupils should constrict, a response referred to as accommodation.
Interpretation
The eyes should be able to easily and smoothly follow your torch light.

b. Hirschberg Test
PEDIATORCH is torch light use for determining the eyes alignment. Shine a light at the eyes and observe where the light reflex is located in referrence to the pupil.

In general, for every mm that the light is decentered, the eye is turned about 15 diopters (7 degrees from center).

Procedure

  1. Hold penlight at arms length in front of child
  2. Gain child's attention blink/tap light
  3. When child fixated on light
  4. Examiner lines up light with her eyes
  5. Note position of Corneal Light Reflex on each eye

Interpretation
Based on Corneal Light Reflex position

1. Normal (No Strabismus)
Reflex falls on nasal portion of each Cornea
2. Esodeviation
On Deviated eye, reflex displaced lateral or temporal
3. Exodeviation
On deviated eye, reflex displaced medially
