HIRSCBERG TEST


b. Hirschberg Test
PEDIATORCH is torch light use for determining the eyes alignment. Shine a light at the eyes and observe where the light reflex is located in referrence to the pupil.

In general, for every mm that the light is decentered, the eye is turned about 15 diopters (7 degrees from center).

Procedure

  1. Hold penlight at arms length in front of child
  2. Gain child's attention blink/tap light
  3. When child fixated on light
  4. Examiner lines up light with her eyes
  5. Note position of Corneal Light Reflex on each eye

Interpretation
Based on Corneal Light Reflex position

1. Normal (No Strabismus)
Reflex falls on nasal portion of each Cornea
2. Esodeviation
On Deviated eye, reflex displaced lateral or temporal
3. Exodeviation
On deviated eye, reflex displaced medially
